1:30-4:30 pm

Safety First (Pre-registration required)

In today’s society, where emergencies and violent incidents appear on the nightly news, safety and security on college campuses is of vital importance. Safety First deals with how to most safely handle commonly encountered situations, such as suspicious people and packages, fire and weather emergencies. In addition, uncommon incidents such as irate or violent patrons or students, bomb threats, etc. are addressed.

Presenter: Adam Duncan, Crime Prevention Officer, University of Missouri Columbia Police Department

1:30-4:30 pm

Higher Education Data Security and Key Emerging Technologies (Pre-registration required)

Increasing complexity in campus information technology has focused higher education's attention on maintaining acceptable levels of security and data protection. Technology solutions often require a critical balancing of support for established business processes, production, and privacy. Within this fast changing environment, registrars are a key specialized constituent group with primary responsibility for data and the privacy issues related to its access and use. In this session we will provide a users level perspective and understanding of the security technologies that IT and its specialized campus constituencies must partner on to successfully implement a secure data environment. The focus will be on providing a conceptual understanding of the relationship between several key technologies-SSL for Web transactions, Identity Management, VPN for remote access, encryption, network firewalls-interior/ perimeter, intrusion detection, shibboleth, and sound policy.

* How can IT and Registrars collaborate to implement an appropriate balance of policies and procedures with the effective use of selected emerging technologies to provide an acceptable level of risk.

* What can be done to better clarify cross-system roles, privileges and authority.

* How can identity management tools be coupled with sound policies to ensure compliance with FERPA and other major regulatory requirements.

* To what degree are key stakeholders sufficiently engaged and committed to a basic level of understanding of the concepts issues and tools.

Presenter: Simon Maxwell, Vice President for Information Technology, Baker University

1:30-4:30 pm

Student Success: Early Alert and Retention Initiatives (Pre-registration required)
Additional Handout

Jefferson College administration recognized the opportunity to improve services to students in order to facilitate student success. Based on the “one-stop shop” model, the Advising & Retention Center (ARC) opened in March 2006.

Program facilitators will share their most effective retention strategies through a PowerPoint presentation. This will include the award winning Early Alert system that was developed by ARC and Administrative Computing staff at Jefferson College. The system enables staff to deliver timely, personalized services to previously unidentified at-risk students through faculty referrals as early as the first day of the semester. Handouts will be provided to participants, and informal discussion will allow audience members to share information about their retention efforts.
